Outreach

I have lived in St. Louis for over twenty-five years.  The region is home to both a community with a deep interest in history and vibrant institutions committed to preserving and telling the story of the past.  I have been extremely fortunate to work with local organizations that connect residents to their history, equip teachers to engage students in the classroom, and with creative thinkers who are developing new ways to preserve the past.

Speaking with people about the past—and engaging them in the effort to understand it—provides tremendous opportunities to work with people of wide-ranging backgrounds and interests.  This work is always rewarding and helps me in my own efforts to be a better historian.

In addition to working with community organizations in St. Louis, I have participated in professional development programs for government employees, which draws on my knowledge of the federal government. In this work, I explore how the early republic not only explains the structure of government in the United States, but also how the experience of the Founding Fathers provides important examples for developing effective systems of governance.
